Tea Journey - Chai |
 |
Chai is quickly gaining ground as a
replacement beverage for coffee. We know of a few young people who call
this a preferred drink at the local coffee establishment. They stop by
almost daily for a cup of Chai Latte.
Chai is so prevalent in India and Sri Lanka that it could be called the
‘National drink’. It is very common to see the ‘tea
wadis’ serving their chai to the walk-by street traffic. In addition
to the spices and milk, a large amount of sugar is added for that real
chai experience.
Chai is brewed with milk and a mixture of spices. Each recipe can be
different depending upon the spices used. Indian spiced chai is often
referred to as Masala Chai. The word ‘chai’ literally means tea
(different languages use various forms of this word - for example
Portuguese call it ‘cha’, Hindus call it chai, and in Chinese the sound
of the symbol for tea sounds very much like cha.) and ‘masala’ is the
word for the mixture of the various spices - hence Masala Chai.
In many Arabic nations, mint (plus a generous amount of sugar) is the
flavoring of choice. In India, the spicy ‘masala tea’ is a popular
beverage. Traditional Chai is made by boiling black tea with spices such
as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black or white pepper; milk
and sugar are usually added as well. Beyond herbs and spices, the flavor
craze has expanded recently to include just about every flavor
imaginable, from banana to white chocolate.

For Stash Tea's interpretation of this classic Indian drink, which we
sometime carry in the retail store, they blend rich, flavorful Indian
black teas and cinnamon, clove,
ginger and cardamom. The brewed tea is very aromatic with a flavor that
is slightly sweet, strong and penetrating, with rich, full bodied
lingering flavor notes. This tea is very pleasant plain, or with milk
(regular or evaporated) and sugar added. It is exceptional any time of
day, as a rich morning cup, enjoyable dessert tea or as a special taste
treat.
